Tocopherols are lipid soluble anti-oxidants that protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. a-Tocopherol is the form of tocopherol preferentially absorbed by homo sapiens. Various isofroms and analogues of tocopherol have opposing and differentiated regulatory activities in vivo.
